Zavaidoc remains one of my most sensuous characters, and the novel itself is an epic experiment built around the sensational news item. I reconstructed the year 1923 through a love story unfolding against the backdrop of everyday Bucharest, where balls and royal events intertwine with burning facts: swindles, kidnappings, and an enigmatic murder that many generations have tried to unravel. In that magnificent year, Zavaidoc sang and fell in love.
Adriana Irimescu asked me about all this during a filmed journey for TVR through today’s Bucharest, which still preserves the memory of the year 1923.
