The German edition launch of Doina Ruști’s novel The Ghost in the Mill took place in October 2017 as part of the Frankfurt Book Fair, the world’s most important international publishing event.
The novel was recently published in German by Klak Verlag (Berlin), in a translation by Eva Ruth Wemme and and presented to the public at the Frankfurt Book Fair, during a special event supported by the Romanian Ministry of Culture, attended by editors, critics, translators, and readers interested in contemporary Eastern European literature.
The launch featured Doina Ruști, alongside Jörg Becken and Jan Cornelius, in a discussion focused on literature, history, and truth, drawing on the central themes of The Ghost in the Mill: traumatic memory, mechanisms of oppression, and the persistence of the past within collective life.
The 2017 edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair (11–15 October) brought together many of the most prominent international writers, including Margaret Atwood, Dan Brown, Michel Houellebecq, Ken Follett, Leila Slimani, and Alain Mabanckou, under the overarching theme of freedom of expression, with particular reference to writers working under political pressure, especially in Turkey. France, the guest of honor, was represented by over 180 authors.
The launch of The Ghost in the Mill received international and Romanian media coverage, including Nine O’Clock, which highlighted it as a significant Romanian event at the Frankfurt Book Fair, and Mediafax. These are complemented by a photo album created by the author and a video from the launch event.
The presence of The Ghost in the Mill at the Frankfurt Book Fair confirms the international circulation of Doina Ruști’s work and the growing critical interest in contemporary Romanian literature within global debates on memory, history, and freedom.
